The AAH: (working definition) The hypothesis that moving through water has acted as an agency of selection in the evolution of humans more than it has in the evolution of our ape cousins. And that, as a result, many of the major physical differences between humans and the other apes are best explained as adaptations to moving (e.g. wading, swimming and/or diving) better through various aquatic media and from greater feeding on resources that might be procured from such habitats.

During the filming in Greece, Hannah Stacey (Stunt Double for Camilla Rutherford) set two new British freediving records.

Sébastien Nagel, real-life chairman of the world freediving agency AIDA, is a key character in the movie, however portrayed quite unflatteringly. Watching an early sneak review of the film left him quite angry about the depiction of himself, and reportedly the agency has initiated an official lawsuit (August 2004). He later retracted all his objections and apologized.

The film was aired for the first time at a sneak preview for the world freediving elite at the team world championship in Vancouver in August of 2004. It immediately caused major controversy in freediving circuits, because of storyline critique of the real AIDA agency depicted in the film. Apparently, the freedivers themselves found the film's depiction to be unrealistic. It was reported that during many of the films dramatic highlights, parts of the audience were giggling.

"Buccal pumping" is a technique by which some breath-hold divers voluntarily can increase their lung volume above their normal total lung capacity (TLC). After a completed maximum inspiration, the diver "gasps" air into the mouth while the glottis is closed. After the mouth has been closed, a positive oral pressure is created by a swallowing manoeuvre, while at the same time the glottis is opened. Thus, the air is pumped into the lungs. Thereafter the cycle is repeated until as much as 1.5 litres has been added to the TLC (7). Buccal pumping is used by these breath-hold divers to increase pre-dive lung volume and thereby supposedly also the theoretical diving depth.

Due to the elastic recoil of the chest wall, the intrathoracic pressure is increased during breath-holding at TLC with relaxed respiratory muscles. This reduces the venous return and thus cardiac output (4), which causes a transient reduction in arterial blood pressure (BP) during the first 20 s of breath-holding (1, 3). This reduction in BP would be expected to be accentuated by buccal pumping. Fainting has been reported to occur in association with buccal pumping by individual divers (personal communications).

This study was designed to elucidate the circulatory effects of this manoeuvre and to verify the hypothesis that fainting could be caused by a fall in BP due to the excessive intrathoracic pressure after buccal pumping.

The effect of the diving response on alveolar gas exchange was investigated in 15 subjects. During steady-state exercise (80 W) on a cycle ergometer, the subjects performed 40-s apneas in air and 40-s apneas with face immersion in cold (10°C) water. Heart rate decreased and blood pressure increased during apneas, and the responses were augmented by face immersion. Oxygen uptake from the lungs decreased during apnea in air (-22% compared with eupneic control) and was further reduced during apnea with face immersion (-25% compared with eupneic control). The plasma lactate concentration increased from control (11%) after apnea in air and even more after apnea with face immersion (20%), suggesting an increased anaerobic metabolism during apneas. The lung oxygen store was depleted more slowly during apnea with face immersion because of the augmented diving response, probably including a decrease in cardiac output. Venous oxygen stores were probably reduced by the cardiovascular responses. The turnover times of these gas stores would have been prolonged, reducing their effect on the oxygen uptake in the lungs. Thus the human diving response has an oxygen-conserving effect.
